Twin Towers Impact Project
Manhattan, NY
T.J. Russo Consultants was brought on board to oversee the fire investigation and analysis portion of the committee that was organized in the aftermath of Sept. 11, 2001. The committee consisted of knowledgeable experts from around the world that assisted in the reconstruction and evaluation of the terrorist attack and destruction that occurred at the World Trade Center. The assignment for T.J. Russo Consultants focused on the analysis of the structural design, fire retardant materials, fuel loads, fire protection systems and Fire Department Operations.
New York City Steam Explosion
Manhattan, NY
In July of 2007, a steam explosion occurred on the corner of this famous Manhattan intersection at East 41st and Lexington Ave. The incident occurred during the “evening rush hour,” causing a massive geyser of hot steam and a 40-story-high shower of debris. T.J. Russo Consultants was retained to provide expertise and manpower relating to the evidence extraction efforts of the incident. A team of experts from our firm facilitated a 24-hour a day, two week long operation, and established a chain of custody for over 1,000 “asbestos contaminated” artifacts. The largest evidence extraction of its kind.
Hackensack Ford
Hackensack, NJ
A fire at a Ford Dealership that led to the deaths of five firefighters. The incident started just before 3 p.m. in the rear service area of the dealership and while firefighters were operating inside the structure, an approximate 60-foot section of the roof had collapsed. A group of investigators from T.J. Russo Consultants and recommended companies were retained to conduct the origin and cause analysis into the fire and collapse. Our team worked alongside the Bergen County Arson Squad regarding the design and construction of the truss roof, the impact of varying fuel loads, flame spread above the shop area, the fire-ground operations and more.
Seaside Heights Boardwalk
Seaside Heights, NJ
The fire ensued on September 12, 2013 north of a Kohr's Frozen Custard shop on this famous New Jersey Shore Boardwalk. The blaze destroyed more than 50 businesses, including the Funtown Pier Amusement Park and occurred less than a year after the boardwalk was devastated by Hurricane Sandy. More than 400 firefighters converged on the ten-alarm fire and, although wind and random explosions created an operational challenge, the Fire Department was able to cut a trench through the boardwalk north of the fire to halt the advancing flames. T.J. Russo Consultants was retained on behalf of the insurance company for the business initially reported to be above and to the south of where the fire originated.
Father’s Day Fire
Astoria, NY
On June 17th, Father’s Day, a hardware store in Astoria caught fire when a teenager reportedly rummaging for a can of spray paint, knocked over a jug of gasoline. The five-alarm fire and subsequent explosion, lead to the deaths of three firefighters and career ending injuries of almost a dozen more. T.J. Russo Consultants assisted the FDNY in their data collection efforts, brought in world renowned expertise and assisted in the analysis of events that led to the fatal explosion.
The Empire State Building Fire
Manhattan, NY
A five-alarm fire started on the 51st floor of this historic building, forcing sightseers on the observation deck over 50 stories above, to scramble for their lives. The blaze injured 38 people and the day after the incident, the Fire Department filed criminal charges against the management of the sky-scrapper, claiming that defects existed in the alarm system and that they had no fire safety director on site. T.J. Russo Consultants was retained on behalf of the building’s insurance company to investigate the origin and cause of the fire as well as the issues pertaining to life safety.
